Farm Equipment and Tools

Activity:    Student's Choice

1.   The following tools are used in the care of the animals. For each tool, indicate the situation under which each would be used.

feed scoop hoof trimmer stethoscope
weigh scale wire cutters halter
rope  large crayon hair clippers
computer  hay fork hypodermic needle
shovel

2.   Farmers use their equipment to make work easier or to solve problems. Design a machine to solve one of these problems.
     a)   Corn and grain planters that plant the seeds in rows across a field.
     b)   A machine to plant three straight rows of pumpkin seeds.

3.   A quantity of dried grass or broken up leaves has been placed on the floor of your classroom. Design a machine that will rake or collect the material into rows so it could be picked up and baled.

4.   Your tractor is not working. Design a machine to lift the large round bales (about 400 kilos) and bring them in from the field.

5.   As a class, create a floor plan or diorama of a farm. Prepare an equipment display using farm equipment models that organizes the models following the sequence of when they would be used on the farm. Write a description of each section.
