Nutrition Information

The rainbow food guide provides a graphic display of these classifications for students.

Grain Products provide fibre that aids digestion and elimination, energy and B vitamins which help release the energy from food.

Vegetables and Fruits
provide Vitamin A to help young people grow and develop good vision, healthy skin and resistance to infection and the Vitamin C necessary for healthy teeth, gums and blood vessels.

Milk Products provide calcium, riboflavin and Vitamin D which work together to build strong bones and teeth, protein which helps growth and repairs body tissue, and Vitamin B12 which maintains healthy blood.

Meat and Alternatives provide protein for growth and repair of body tissues, B vitamins that release the energy from foods and iron that builds hemoglobin in red blood cells to transport oxygen and carbon dioxide. Beef is a good source of vitamin B12.

Beef contains a great deal of nutrition that helps the human body grow and remain healthy.

  • Protein builds and repairs body tissue.
  • Vitamins B6, Bl 2, A, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin help the body use energy, and form blood.
  • Fat supplies energy to the body.
  • Minerals such as iron, zinc, and phosphorus help the blood, and help build strong teeth and bones.

Alternative Proteins - Other foods can provide us with protein for our bodies. Some vegetables and soybeans are examples of sources for alternative proteins.

Nutrition recommendations are designed to maintain a healthy weight; overzealous calorie and fat restriction can interfere with growth and development. Developing a positive attitude toward eating a variety of interesting and nutritious foods is the first step in the process of growing strong and healthy.
