The Beef Production System

Canadian beef producers are proud to raise quality beef, using a wide variety of land and soil types. Beef producers ensure that consumers receive beef products and by-products of high quality, at an affordable price. The cattlemen who manage this complex beef system are an important part of the country's economy.

There are many steps in producing beef and its by-products. People work together in the beef production chain to develop a safe and healthy end product. Some people have a direct role with the animals, while others are in support roles. The beef production system can be outlined in these four main stages:

1. Production and Growing Stage

  • Raising the calves on the farm
  • Growing the crops to feed the animals
  • Transporting the calves
  • Selling the calves at an auction market
  • Feeding the cattle in the feedlot
2. Marketing and Processing Stage
  • Inspection and grading of the animals
  • Cutting the meat
  • Preparing the by-products
3. Wholesale and Retail Stage
  • Selling the meat cuts
  • Selling the by-products
4. Consumer Stage
  • Buying and eating the meat
  • Buying and using the by-products
