The Beef Production System

Activity:   Student's Choice

Beef ... the Pioneer Way

The Beef Production System Poster shows today's system for producing beef. Ontario's pioneer families raised most of their own food on their own farms and had very little extra grain or animals to sell to others.

  • Research the way the pioneers lived more than 150 years ago in Ontario.
  • Hypothesize (suggest) the difference you might expect in the size of the farms, number of people working on the farms, number and types of animals that might have been raised on the farm, breeds of animals, etc.
  • Prepare a system plan or picture that would show the pioneer way of raising beef and how it would be different from modern methods.

Sharing Habitat

From Beef Production System Poster observe the areas where the cows and calves live.

  • Make a list of the features of the area where they eat and spend their time. This might include items like fences, forests, ponds, and wetlands.
  • Beside each feature write the name of an animal, bird, amphibian or insect that might live in that same environment.
  • Write a story or song from the perspective of one of these creatures that tells what it is like living with the cows and calves.

Different Breeds

  • Collect illustrations and photographs of beef cattle.
  • Contact the Ontario Cattlemen's Association who can provide contacts for breed information materials.
  • Create a chart of the various names of breeds of beef cattle.
  • Use the collected resources to identify the important characteristics of each breed (name, colour, height, weight, country of origin, special characteristics) and illustrate your information in chart form.
